Quatama Elementary, Hillsboro, OR: 4th grade students
4th graders at Quatama Elementary learned about erosion and native Oregon trees as part of their Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM) curriculum. They gathered native Oregon leaves from their neighborhoods and around their school and brought them into class to print into clay. They learned about various clay sculpture techniques including pinching, slab rolling, and coiling. Then each student designed and built a small piece of a large ceramic tree, employing both subractive and additive applications of texture. The final tree hangs permenantly in the school.
